Mayakoba is deeply committed with nature and development of an eco-conscious luxury resort community within a carefully preserved diverse environment. Encompassing three different ecosystems – beach and coral reefs, lagoons and canals, and mangrove jungles –, Banyan Tree Mayakoba was built in line with the Mayakoba Tourism Development’s conservation requirements.

Banyan Tree honors its engagement with the environment by using a water treatment system. Through a network of troughs settled in the surrounding area of the entire Mayakoba development, used water from the resorts travels to a residual water treatment plant in order to get fully cleansed. All treated water on the property is then sent to an irrigation lagoon and distributed to the golf course and other green areas. This guarantees the water canals can be preserved, as it is the unique source of sweet water for the Yucatan Peninsula. Thanks to this water treatment facility, the environmental treasures of these precious waterways are fully protected.
One of Banyan Tree Mayakoba's most recent CSR activities is the Melipona Bee Project, involving the recovery of the Meliponabecheii. This species of native stingless bee was traditionally raised by the Mayans in order to obtain their precious honey, which is specially known for its antibiotic properties. This project has involved the harvesting of such bee species in an effort to increase the overall population that will ultimately allow for more production of goods that use this honey, such as soap. The overall objective is to keep the Mayan tradition alive through the creation of small community enterprises, allowing an economic development but in an environment-friendly manner.
Banyan Tree Mayakoba is also deeply involved in the reforestation of surrounding areas. That is why we created the hotel's Mangrove Planting Program, and the schools within the community are more than welcomed to be part of it. Another CSR initiative undertaken by the Hotel is the Waste Production Program, in which remaining food from the kitchens and restaurants is taken to a local farm in order to be composted.
Furthermore, we give our guests the opportunity to help and be part of nature by living one of the most amazing experiences at the Turtle Release activity at Sands beach club, where we release baby turtles in the beach making sure they get safe to the sea in order to help preserve this marvelous species. This activity takes place two times per year.
