Banyan Tree gives back to nature and the community with many green commitments

Each property minimizes the impact on the ecology and is dedicated to carrying
out local community development. Employs local associates in each location in
which we operate. Showcases local artisans via craftwork retailing in Banyan Tree
Gallery Establish and fund dedicated research facilities to enable the scientific
study of the ecology surrounding our resorts, like the coral regeneration and
turtle conservation in the Maldives, as well as amphibians and birds in Bintan,
Indonesia. In 2007, Banyan Tree introduced "Greening Communities" to
promote environmental and social sustainability through greater awareness of
climate change by planting 2000 new trees per year, per property between
2007-2016. Earth Day packages promoting guest education and environmental
awareness. Adoption of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to
empower local peoples.

Nurturing the mangrove. Preserving the coral reef.

The offshore coral reefs thrive in the warm, clear waters of the Caribbean, creating
a rich and diverse marine oasis. This delicate eco-system, home to several hundred
species of marine life, is protected and nourished by the coastal mangrove forests.

The submerged roots of the mangrove trees are a breeding ground for birds and most of
the marine life that migrates to the reef. These precious mangroves trap and produce
nutrients for food and habitat, stabilize the shoreline, and filter pollutants emanating
from the land thus protecting the delicate coral reefs. Banyan Tree and OHL have ensured
that the fragile dunes and mangrove jungles of Mayakoba have been carefully preserved
and nurtured, now and forever.
